What is bacteriostatic water?
Bacteriostatic water is sterile water for injection containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol — a preservative that inhibits bacterial growth so a multi-dose vial can be punctured repeatedly over a period of days rather than discarded after one use.
How is it different from sterile water?
Plain sterile water carries no preservative and is intended for single use once opened. The benzyl alcohol in bacteriostatic water lets the same vial be re-entered for up to 28 days when stored correctly.
How long is a vial good after first puncture?
Up to 28 days when stored at controlled room temperature, protected from light, with the stopper sanitized before each entry. Always discard at the printed expiry or 28 days post-puncture, whichever comes first.
